Attack of the Space Octopus from Europa

by Cowboy Bob Sorensen

This will be an interesting lead-in to Question Evolution Day. As regular readers of this weblog and Piltdown Superman know, biblical creationists emphasize critical thinking (examining facts and using logic); we want to help people in how to think while the secular evolutionary science industry tells you what to think, and to ask questions. Let's examine the rantings of a professor that frighten even the hands at the Darwin Ranch.

A professor thinks that life is almost certainly on a moon of Jupiter. We can look at her fact-free speculations.

I have to tell you up front that I have a negative attitude about this, so I am not unbiased. A reader of The Question Evolution Project sent me a link about how it is "almost a racing certain" that there is life on Jupiter's moon Europa, and it would be like octopuses on Earth. The alleged science in her narrative smacks of material from the 2013 movie Europa Report. Mayhaps I could make money doing this kind of thing: a space probe is sent to Eurpoa, a giant tentacle reaches up and pulls it into the ocean, alien critters learn our technology and end up attacking Earth. Nah, I'd be sued for plagiarism.

There were some people who thought that octopuses on Earth were actually sent from outer space, but such "science" was not taken seriously by thinking people. Even so, when searching for photos to use on weblogs, aliens would occasionally yield octopus images. This helps reveal that the octopus-alien thing gained some popularity.

The article we are considering is titled, "British scientist says it is 'almost a racing certain' that the icy seas on Jupiter's moon Europa are home to alien life that are 'octopus-like creatures'". I reckon that kitsch sells news, link hits, and even passes for science. It the riter rites good, even referring to Europa as a planet. Not quite, as it is about the size of our own moon.

The professor is Monica Grady, and she offers her opinions based on presupposing that evolution is true and that the universe is ancient. She also has some comments about life on Mars: "...if there’s going to be life on Mars, it’s going to be under the surface of the planet. There you’re protected from solar radiation. And that means there’s the possibility of ice remaining in the pores of the rocks, which could act as a source of water". Evidence, please? How does she know that water could last for billions of Darwin years, but even secularists admit that water cannot last for billions of years on our own moon. While these celestial objects are different, the comparisons should be considered.

Space probes can only provide so much information. I'll allow that we get quite a bit of it, and it's fascinating, but there are still many unanswered questions. The article says about Europa, "It is thought to have an iron core, a rocky mantle and a surface ocean of salty water, like Earth, with ice flowing underneath." Maybe, but that's conjecture. Meanwhile, Earth's own inner core should not exist. So much to learn about our own home, so speculations about places out yonder should be presented with caution.

Grady presupposed evolution when she pontificated, "‘Humans evolved from little furry mammals that got the opportunity to evolve because the dinosaurs were killed by an asteroid impact". Sorry Monica, that is circular reasoning to assume evolution here and then work from that towards life elsewhere in the universe. We have seen on this site and many others the paucity of evolutionary evidence. People believe in evolution and materialism, rejecting the Creator and evidence for him because they want to. It's not about evidence, but about worldviews.

If y'all take a notion to click on that mostly fact-free article with the awkward title (above), the mediocre reading does have a few fun facts. More importantly, you can see the weasel words that are used to make assertions, such as probably, perhaps, possibly, and related words not necessarily starting with the letter P. This is very helpful when reading other sciencey kitsch. Let's keep on thinking critically. We cannot help to question (and even reject) evolution while seeing the evidence for the Creator's work.

Also, you may be interested in seeing this post about Europa and other places that provide evidence for recent creation. Also, "Can Astrobiology Ever Become a Real Science?" Meanwhile, be nice to octopuses. Their relatives on Europa may one day invade and enslave us, even though Monica does not present evidence.
