Because we were Created to Work

It is a fact that many people are unhappy with their jobs. Some organizations are run by laissez-faire methods and dehumanize the employees. When checking reviews of companies, frequent complaints include low pay and no chance for advancement. However, dissatisfaction may be due to our perspectives.

Not only were we created to work (raising children, construction worker, executive, etc.), but we can learn that we glorify god through our work.

For Christians, we must realize that we were created to work, even from the beginning (Gen. 2:15). It may seem surprising and uncomfortable, but those commands for bondservants to please their masters because they are really working to please Christ also apply to working people (e.g., Eph. 6:5-9).

There is nothing wrong with seeking advancement or a job that pays better and uses one's skills. When that is not on the horizon, consider Paul's example regarding contentment (Phil. 4:11-13). Also remember that God is glorified when we do any job, whether construction worker, raising children, executive in the corner office, or others.
With as much time people spend working and so many not happy with what they do, it would be helpful to consider a biblical perspective about work. After all, God has revealed much to us about work. In this brief overview, we consider why we work, the dominion mandate, how the fall of man affected work, and the way we expand God’s glory (and our own good) through work.
