The Great Unconformity is Greatly Unconforming
According to standard secular uniformitarian geology, the present is the key to the past. Rock layers were laid down gradually, showing a progression over billions of years. The Grand Canyon should be a classic example of that concept, but there are problems in it that secularists cannot explain.
One of these is a huge mystery called the Great Unconformity, because the alleged gradual progression simply does not exist. There billions of years missing, and geologists have been trying to find explanations for many years.

The Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, USA, holds numerous mysteries for the uniformitarian scientists who believe present processes can explain the rocks from the past. The 1,200 m of horizontal rocks showing on the walls of the Grand Canyon was considered to be a library of the gods by John Wesley Powell who . . . thought he could read the history of the earth’s geology from the horizontal layers and from the igneous and metamorphic layers below. However, these layers present some nasty difficulties for the secular scientists, who are currently attempting to find answers. One of the difficulties is the missing time between the horizontal layers, for instance the lowest gap in time between the Precambrian rocks and the Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone above. . . . This gap in time is called the Great Unconformity and is a planation surface that is generally flat but rolling in some locations.

Since the Great Unconformity doesn't work with the uniformitarian deep time narrative, secularists are trying to find explanations as to why it's so recalcitrant. A report in a peer-reviewed journal attempted to explain what is observed. It did not go well. What does work is using creation science Genesis Flood models; then the data makes sense.
The Great Unconformity is one of the most baffling mysteries in the geological sciences.1 It is marked by a massive surface of erosion that appears all over the world at about the same time. Many studies have tried and failed to satisfactorily explain its global occurrence. Now a new report published in Geology claims to take a step forward in solving this mystery. Just like prior attempts, this research effort still falls short in providing an explanation for the universal nature of the Great Unconformity. The global Flood still remains the best solution.
A significant portion of the Earth’s crust, including some sedimentary layers, was simultaneously stripped off a majority of the world’s continents to make the Great Unconformity. This erosion occurred just prior to the deposition of the overlying fossil-rich sedimentary layers that we identify as Flood rocks.
