Learning to Appreciate Chickens

It can be easy for city folks in the Western world to not give chickens a second thought, getting them processed for food whole or in parts at the store and having a selection of eggs. Some people may be surprised by a visit to the county fair to learn that there are many breeds with some startling differences.

Although in the wild chickens have short lifespans, but in captivity some live several years and many people keep them as pets. While creationists and Darwinists may agree that domestic chickens probably descended from a common ancestor, the red jungle fowl, we believe that chickens and others are a part of one biblical created kind.

City folks in the Western world may not give chickens a second thought. They are a gift from our Creator, probably descended from the red junglefowl, with interesting characteristics.

They seem stupid and harmless, but when hens protect the young or roosters protect the hens, they can be fierce against intimidating opponents. Chickens were one of the gifts our Creator provided for nourishment and to appreciate. The article linked below gives several interesting nuggets of information.
Have you ever eaten chicken wings? What’s on your plate doesn’t really show how big the complete wing was, but it does remind us that chickens are grown for food, including their eggs. They are bred to optimize the quality (and quantity, by unnatural accelerated maturing) of their meat, or for egg-laying, sometimes both. To a lesser degree they are kept by fanciers and as pets.

My wife and I have kept chickens for a few years and have observed some interesting chicken facts. And yes, we think their eggs taste better than supermarket eggs!
