Halloween History and — the Genesis Flood?

You know the routine. Kids dress up in costumes, go to the doors of friends and strangers, shout "trick or treat", and expect goodies. At least, that is what usually happened in the formerly United States and other parts of the world.

Things are a mite different now. Because of various dangers, kids are less likely to run wild and free. Adults, however, dress up, decorate the yard, have parties, and more. Most have only a vague idea of how Halloween originated.

Like Darwinism, Halloween has pagan roots. There are many celebrations related to it around the world that focus on the dead. Like Flood legends, there may be a common historical source.

Halloween itself can be traced back to Celtic pagans in Ireland and Scotland. (By the way, universal common ancestor evolution is also a pagan religious view which was updated in Victorian England). Giving homage to the dead is far older than that, and more widespread than the Celts. Celebrations regarding the dead are found in many disparate cultures, although the Western world has exchanged horror for honoring the deceased. It is interesting that many Day of the Dead-type festivals occur around the same time of year.

Similar themes, similar times, many locations. Is it possible that they originated from a common source? After all, there are global flood legends all around the world, many of which have striking similarities to the Genesis Flood account. It seems reasonable to consider the possibility that there was a major event among people who were later dispersed and brought some form of that account with them. Most of these involve some sort of sacrifice or other. After disembarking (de-Arking?), Noah and the families presented sacrifices to God.

Kids and even many adults love getting dressed up for Halloween. And they love the candy, of course. It’s just innocent fun, isn’t it—or is it? But let’s think carefully and biblically about the history, nature, and impact of the holiday.

When did this holiday begin and why? Was the Halloween origin of pagan origins or is there something more behind Halloween history? How should Christians view this day in general? To understand these questions further, we need to go back to the roots of Halloween.
